The kids really like to have something special that they know how to do, and that they can contribute to the family.

I taught my 7-year-old son how to bake a potato in the microwave. Oksy, so it isn't gourmet cooking, but is the one that needs to snack in between snacks. This boy was born hungry. Twenty minutes after a meal, he's looking through the fridge for more food again!

So -- now he can make his own baked potato. Even better, he can help make a snack for the whole family.

Another younger child really likes to make peanut butter sandwiches. So she makes them whenever we have them for lunch.

I think having special tasks gives the kids a reason for being there - children need to contribute, too!
