One of my favorite books about education is written by
John Taylor Gatto, called The Underground History of American Education - he hits the nail squarely on the head in this one, attributing the demise of education in this country to the source of the problem.

I really enjoy the "unschooling" approach he pretty much advocates.

If you haven't read this book, I highly recommend it.
